David Roberts 1963-2020

Some very sad news to share with the NITP community. We may have only had the pleasure of David Roberts’ company for a weekend but he definitely left an impression on us and the team of NITP at the 2019 Red Bull Timelaps. He has sadly passed on at the young age of 57 and it has definitely shocked us and those who have had the privilege to know, ride and be taught by him.

We were looking for a final rider for the 25hr endurance race and David was referred to us from Spok’d who were working with David and his cycling development. Travelling down from Manchester, we sorted out a leafy route for David to follow from Central London all the way to Windsor where the race was being held. I think he appreciated the scenic route compared to the awful A4 he was going to follow! Meeting David, you could tell how down to earth he was and how buoyed he was being part of the team for the weekend. I wasn’t sure if he knew what he was getting himself in for, but we loved his enthusiasm especially with some stormy conditions being forecasted.

David wanted to offer a hand and advice to anyone and everyone throughout the race and really absorbed the whole experience to heart. We had left the team for the evening with a promise of a bacon sarnie and hash browns for the morning. David was out on his stint when we arrived the Sunday morning but think he did completed his fastest lap of the race when he smelt breakfast arrive.

Although it was only 48hrs of his company, we kept in touch via social media as did some of the team members which just showed he was company to keep. His daughter Poppy has asked everyone who knows him to write a letter as a keepsake for the family and to donate towards a chosen charity close to David’s heart so it would be really appreciated if we could all raise some funds in David’s name.

Thoughts are with his family at this time and we hope somewhere, David is still cycling.

RIP David Roberts 1963 -2020
